The Pikeville Main Street Project began in 2005 with the selection of Farmer | Morgan as planning and design consultants by the City of Pikeville. The city developed their first redevelopment plan in 2005-2006 of which the Main Street Project became the focus for the Pikeville Business District (PBD).
The business district serves the citizens of Pikeville and had previously become automobile oriented, making it necessary for residents and visitors of Pikeville to drive to each individual place they desired, despite the compact nature of the city. The municipal leadership determined that the overall goal of any redevelopment effort should be to bring people back to the downtown and provide easy walkability in the business district. In addition, the business district should become a place for public gathering and commercial exchange.
